About the ArtisansVenta Maya
In the middle of a corn field in an aldea of Solola, Maria Bocal sits on the porch of her family home, busily braiding and weaving multicolored strands of thread into different length ties.
Maria, the oldest daughter in a family of nine, started making crafts when she was 13 years old. She attended elementary school at the convent school in San Andres Semetabaj. In 1995, she graduated at 29 years of age. Her education there helped her organize Venta Maya.
She is now married with two young children and living in San Jose Chacaya with her family. Her small business along with her husband's wages, help support the family. Maria hopes that her business will continue to grow as time passes.
