About the ArtisansSanto Tomas WeaversThe Santo Tomas Weavers, Lucia and Catarina Ixtos, live in a village near Santo Tomas la Union. Kay met them when she was working for a solar oven project in their village. They work on the traditional backstrap loom used by women in Guatemala. When she saw the beauty of their Nahuala style weaving, she began bringing their products to the U.S. to sell.
As they worked together, they learned to modify their fabric in color and style to make it more saleable in the U.S. market while still maintaining the integrity of their tradition. They use only colorfast thread.
A young woman teacher has joined the group as a seamstress. She sews their beautiful fabric into purses and other items.
