About the ArtisansCeramicas Palopo
Ceramicas Palopo, a family business located on the shores of Lake Atitlan in San Antonio Palopo, Solola, Guatemala, makes unique animals and other more traditional ceramic items. It is run by the Perez Xojil extended family. Felipe Perez Xojil is customer representative and vendor of their items. They are high fired for durability and decorated with lead free glazes. Gaspar Perez, the father of the family, is the potter. Francisco, Lucia, Yolanda, Nilsa Elizabeth, and Felipe’s wife, Marta decorate the fired pieces. The initials of the painter are on the bottom of each item.
The family learned the skill of producing high quality ceramics from a North American, Ken Edwards, who came to Guatemala looking for a source of clay. San Antonio was where he settled. He created the animals and other pieces and taught the Perez Xojil family how to make and decorate them. He was amazed at how quickly they learned the new skill and began to develop their own decorating styles.
The group contacted Mission: Guatemala after seeing our name in the Washington, D.C. Craft Center Directory as a group that worked in Guatemala. This is typical of their style. They are well able to run their own business and have a sizeable market in Guatemala. They asked us to help them expand to the export market. When you buy from them, you will not only get a beautiful piece of “artesania”, but will reward a hardworking family for their efforts to make a better life for themselves.
